royal gramma basslet

The Royal Gramma Basslet is one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable fish in the saltwater hobby. Its bold two-tone coloration — a vivid purple-violet front half that transitions sharply into a vibrant golden yellow toward the tail — is stunning under reef lighting and never fades. Hardy, relatively peaceful, and reef-safe, the Royal Gramma is a classic choice that earns its place in both beginner and expert reef systems alike. It spends much of its time hovering near rockwork and cave openings, often swimming upside-down along overhangs — a charming quirk unique to the species.

Care Notes:

• Tank size: 30+ gallons with ample rockwork and caves for shelter and territory
• Reef-safe: yes — completely safe with corals and invertebrates
• Hardy and adaptable; one of the more forgiving fish for newer reef keepers
• Will establish and defend a territory around a cave or crevice; provide adequate hiding spots, especially in multi-fish systems
• May show aggression toward fish of similar shape, color, or that invade its territory; best kept singly unless in a very large tank
• Diet: carnivore — readily accepts frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and quality pellets; also picks parasites off other fish in the wild (cleaner behavior)
• A jumper — a secure lid is recommended
