The Hillstream Reticulated Loach is a stunning freshwater-to-brackish specialist prized for its distinctive reticulated patterning and active, engaging behavior. These hardy bottom-dwellers thrive in fast-moving, oxygen-rich environments with strong water flow and cool to moderate temperatures (65–75°F). They excel in heavily planted tanks with smooth rocks and driftwood, where they can graze on algae and biofilm.
Diet consists primarily of algae wafers, vegetable matter, and high-quality sinking pellets supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods. Feed small amounts daily, as they are continuous grazers.
Tank mates should be peaceful, non-aggressive fish of similar size or larger. Avoid housing with aggressive cichlids, large predatory fish, or anything that views them as food. They are generally compatible with other loaches, tetras, and peaceful community fish in adequately sized tanks.
Growth and size vary by subspecies, but most reach 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm) in captivity. Provide a minimum 30-gallon tank for a small group, with ample hiding spots and strong water circulation to replicate their natural habitat.
Water parameters: pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness, consistent water changes weekly to maintain pristine conditions. These loaches are sensitive to poor water quality and require excellent filtration. With proper care and stable conditions, they are long-lived and rewarding aquarium residents.
